Review of Tulpan (2009) by Jeremy R — 15 Jun 2009
Usually when someone negatively refers to a movie as being a sketch stretched out to a feature, it's in reference to a horrible SNL spinoff, not a Kazakh drama about a man trying to find a wife. Of its 100 minute runtime, "Tulpan" contains maybe 30 minutes of plot.
The rest is lingering shots of people herding sheep, walking around aimlessly, or singing (I would've given anything for the daughter to shut up). There's only so far gorgeous cinematography can get you before you're dying to see something actually happen within the frame.
The acting, all by non-professionals, is completely natural and the documentary-like approach elevates the material, but at 100 minutes I was ready to tear my eyes out. And did we really need a 10-minute long single take of a sheep being born?
