Review of Tulpan (2009) by Murong B — 04 Jul 2009
This movie set it rural Kazakhstan is rather thin on plot (given its length), although the landscapes are quite breathtaking. It's a rather unique coming-of-age story; I can bet that the particular illuminations of the protagonist have never been seen on film before.
In the end, the filmmaker does do a good job in conveying his message that whether it be the busiest city or the most isolated rural village, everyone's hopes, desires and needs are effectively the same (although the level of success people actually do achieve are markedly different).
