Review of Tully (2018) by John S — 03 May 2018
Jason Reitman directs, and Diablo Cody writes such a beautiful, powerful, emotional film. This film marks the fourth collaboration between these two, after Juno, Jennifer's Body, and Young Adult. This is a grounded, honest story about motherhood, and Charlize Theron gives one of the best performances of her career. Mackenzie Davis also delivers a fantastic performance - Mark Duplass and Ron Livingston also add so much to this story. Each actor here, their performances are all so natural for what their characters go through. Across the board, the performances are outstanding but Charlize Theron really just explodes with passion here.
The film mainly tackles the difficulties of parenthood, but also touches on autism in children, as well as depression in parents. But this is all done in a way that doesn't crowd the story with so many plot points that won't pay off in the end. It's definitely a unique way to tell the story of this mother with her husband and children, and their night nurse. I don't have any children and clearly I cannot know firsthand what motherhood is like, mentally or physically. I highly recommend this if it's playing in a theater near you; to any parents reading this, especially parents with two or three children, please let me know what you think about this one!
