Review of Tuesdays with Morrie (1999) by Calum H — 21 Aug 2009
The film veers dangerously close to being sentimental, and the way the moral messages have been done also veer dangerously close to being patronising, but the makers of this film have managed to avoid these things happening.
The fact that this great TV movie is ninety minutes long is a strength (the film never feels overlong, never feels like it is dragging on and goes at a fast pace), but also a weakness (we could have got to know more about the characters and Morrie could have philosophised about even more topics if the film had been longer).
It is moving, but it is not particularly a sad movie - rather, it's so uplifting that chances are it will make you cry, or make you be very close to crying. Jack Lemmon gives a great performance, and the rest of the acting is not bad in the slightest.
