Review of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010) by Octavian — 19 Sep 2014
I think that the main reason I had a difficult time easing into Tucker & Dale VS. Evil is because of the setup itself, which involves partying teens going camping in the woods. That premise is so tired, hackneyed, and uninteresting that it makes previous movies with that subject matter harder to enjoy that actually do it right.
That's how played out it is. So going into this, I had a lot of trepidation and fear as to what I was going to have to watch. Fortunately, the movie has a very strong comedic middle section, mainly because of Alan Tudyk and how events play out for him and Tyler Labine.
The final act of the movie is arguably the weakest and just de-evolves from comedy into something more serious. You're supposed to be invested in your characters by that point, but I'm just sort of invested in them at that point, and find most of what I've seen totally unbelievable and hard to swallow.
Then again, it is really funny at times and has a lot of charm to it. It doesn't totally work all the way through, but that middle section is well-worth checking out, overall.
