Review of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010) by Jacob G — 26 Aug 2012
A fun, excellent example of how to take a common trope and flip it on its head. Fun characters help drive this splatter comedy, but the real draw here is the series of unfortunate misunderstandings which lead to the gore.
The movie parodies other horror films, setting up scenes reminiscent of classic horror, although these feel a bit more like a sideshow--the movie would stand just fine with the bare minimum referential set-up.
Luckily, these references make sense within the context of the story arc--they don't feel thrown in haphazardly. Which is important--unlike referential movies like Scary Movie, Tucker and Dale stands on its own two legs, picking references as punctuation, not the point of the movie.
