Review of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010) by Shawn E — 20 May 2012
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil follows in the vein of the brilliant Shaun of the Dead by effortlessly combining horror and comedy to create something wholly unique and highly entertaining. It follows a group of hot college kids as they travel to West Virginia for a weekend of camping, boozing, and sexing it up. During their time in the woods, they are terrorized by two hillbillies who are hell-bent on murdering every last one of them and eating their faces off.
...or so they think. In a wonderful change of pace from other cliché-ridden horror schlock, the story turns the tables on the standard stereotypes of horror films and reveals the two supposed psycho killer hillbillies to be really genuinely kindhearted individuals named Tucker and Dale who keep finding themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. Tucker (Played by the always wonderful Alan Tudyk) has just purchased a new vacation home - A creepy cabin in the woods, of course - And he and his best friend Dale (Tyler Labine) decide to spend some quality time fishing and relaxing. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned as the hot college kids camping in the same woods are convinced that Tucker and Dale are out to kill them. Chaos ensues and the fun never stops.
What really separates Tucker & Dale vs. Evil from its genre brethren is the strong heart behind everything that happens. The two leads are wonderfully written and played brilliantly. Tyler Labine as Dale is the absolute standout here. He's irresistibly lovable and just plain hysterical. Katrina Bowden (Quite possibly the most beautiful girl on the face of the planet) plays his love interest and she manages to convey a sweetness that most girls with her looks would be unable to sell. But, really, when it comes down to it, that's what Tucker & Dale vs. Evil is all about: Presenting stereotypes and then breaking them apart to reveal just how silly they really are. This movie is hysterical, touching, gory, and most of all lots and lots of fun. One of 2011's best.
