Review of Tsotsi (2005) by Patrick B — 03 Mar 2008
Tsotsi tells the story of a young gang leader who starts to change his ways after stealing a woman's car, and discovering a baby inside. Tsotsi is a rather dark story that doesn't even end on a particularly happy note, but there was something strangely inspiring about all of it.
Presley Chweneyagae gives such a great performance as the title character, and I think he is the main reason this movie is so engrossing. He gives us a character that is definitely filled with flaws, but throughout the movie, it is plain to see that his character is striving to change, striving to be a better person, and that is what makes the movie Tsotsi so inspiring.
Not to mention the movie is beautifully shot, and acted by the rest of the supporting cast. Even though this movie is not very well known, I definitely recommend you check this one out. It won the Academy Award in 2006 for Best Foreign Film, and its plain to see it deserved the award.
