Review of Truth (2015) by Greg B — 31 Oct 2015
"Truth" is a journalism drama starring Cate Blanchett as an investigative reporter for 60 Minutes who stumbles across some classified documents concerning President Bush's military service.
They allege that the president went AWOL and joined the Texas National Guard to avoid deployment to Vietnam. It is the kind of conspiracy that could have killed his 2004 presidential campaign, and once Blanchett exposes the issue, it turns into a media circus where someone has to be held accountable.
I thought Blanchett acted with conviction, showing her character's humane side while maintaining a cool façade in a frenzied, dog-eat-dog world of journalism. Robert Redford supports her as Dan Rather, who retired from 60 Minutes during the time the film takes place.
The film teaches us many lessons, including accountability, the cost of freedom, and the price of information. The movie is acted well and scripted well. Sometimes the editing is a little choppy bur overall this is a relevant, timely drama --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B.
