Review of Trust the Man (2005) by David G — 28 Aug 2008
Excellent performances by Crudup and Gyllenhaal save a film that's otherwise mediocre. Whereas half of the movie is surprising, honest, funny and unique for its genre, the other half is cheesy, Hollywood-ish and implausible. What's frustrating is that, until the end, there's a back-and-forth between the two. Luckily, the last fifteen minutes are entirely cheesy, Hollywood-ish and implausible, so you can turn it off or walk out just about any time in the third act if you want.
Bottom Line: Director Bart Freundlich tries to be Woody Allen, completely fails, but the attempt is still admirable to watch.
(Spoiler Alert!).
If you walk out during the third act, as you should, don't worry; everyone gets the girl. Happy endings for all but the foreign guy.
