Review of Trumbo (2015) by Joel M — 22 Dec 2015
***** Excellent.
Fair Warning: Please do not blacklist me from reading my punlisted movie reviews, but it's kinda my thing you know. Speaking of blacklist, the movie "Trumbo" based on the true story of legendary screenwriter Dalton Trumbo has all the write ingredients of a masterpiece. Bryan Cranston broke new ground and did some badass work here as the title character. Dalton Trumbo was a very talented but yet controversial screenwriter who was a human rights & political advocate; oh, and a communist also. But before you get all "Fidelio" on me, he was not of the revolutionary kind. Consequently, Trumbo was blacklisted from working in Hollywood and had to use pseudonyms for his screen writing efforts; two which gave his pseudonyms Oscar wins for the Trumboline writing works of "Roman Holiday" and "The Brave One". I'm in that Roach Coach that thinks that Jay Roach is deserving of a Best Director Oscar nomination for his direction of "Trumbo". John McNamara's screenplay of a movie about a screenwriter is on my rightlist of acclaimed scribes of 2015. The supporting acting ensemble of "Trumbo" was very solid, including some playing legendary actors; Michael Stuhlbarg as Edward G. Robinson, Diane Lane as Mrs. Dalton Trumbo, David James Elliot as John Wayne, Louis C.K. as Allen Hird, Dean O'Gorman as Kirk Douglas, and the incredible Helen Mirren as gossipist Hedda Hopper. But it's Cranston who was the Der Commisar here with his Oscar-worthy performance! So make sure "Trumbo" gets on your watchlist of movies to see!
