Review of Trumbo (2015) by Omar L — 30 Jan 2016
Movies about Hollywood history is the definition of navel-gazing, and Hollywood's love affair with itself is in full effect here. The Blacklist is a shameful period in American artistic history, but taken out of context (especially with Bridge of Spies being in recent memory), this movie paints such broad strokes over all of its characters that any sense of nuance or subtlety is lost. This movie is, in all respects, a polemic, and not that different from the two-dimensional John Wayne pictures that this mocks.
Still, Bryan Cranston's performance endears us to a man (and men) unfairly targeted for having a difference of opinion. His Academy Award nomination is well-deserved, but special recognition should also go to Louis C.K., whose work in this movie was excellent.
