Review of Trumbo (2015) by Thomas P — 21 Aug 2016
Intelligent, quietly powerful and humorous, and completely absorbing.
A thinking persons film.
Nothing about the essence of Trumbo the man is lost in this biopic. His strengths and his flaws are given full weight, and underlying this humanizing story of the wildly intellectual Pinko is the stunning Cranston performance that is tremendously consistent, authentic and fascinating.
The only thing I found outside of the movie was that Trumbo was considered a communist for his support of workers rights, and not the false larger assumption of support for Russia against the US, tho he did support first amendment rights clearly disagreeing with the paranoid thot-policing of the blacklist.
Cranston embodies Trumbo rather than acts here, leading an amazing cast. Consistent, lean, poignant, and sarcastically hilarious at times, the solid reviews are well deserved.
5 out of 5.
