Review of Trumbo (2015) by Cheryl P — 19 Nov 2015
This is a great period movie, the acting and photography are a delight. An important piece of American, and Hollywood, history is shown with stylish humor although dealing with a serious subject. There is no question that the black listing era was bad and many, mainly in Hollywood, lost their civil liberties.
But here is where the movie was one sided. The talented people in Hollywood were also very naive, or ignorant. Didn't they know what was going on in the Soviet Union? The evils of communism with millions and more enslaved? They were communists, and communism is evil. This movie wants us to believe that during the red scare democracy suffered a major setback. No it did not. Hitler was elected democratically which destroyed the world, and the Hollywood communists wanted America to be like their beloved Russians, a brutal dictatorship where all opponents are eliminated and the rest put in concentration camps. Sadly, we still have people running for office who would do just that.
