I wish I could approach more films with the lowered expectations I had for TRUMBO. Having not realized to what extent I'd been viewing it as a chore, I was pleasantly surprised by the film and its performances, although presumably those involved were aspiring to higher praise than "not painful.

" Competent throughout (occasionally even quite engaging), I was left with a deep ambivalence, combining an odd relief from disagreeing with its harsher critics and a miasma of vague and general disappointment that I was never as engaged as it wanted me to be.
