Review of True Romance (1993) by Simon M — 11 Nov 2011
Unknown to many, Quentin Tarantino has actually done a romantic movie, and that was True Romance. Granted, he didn't direct it (that was Tony Scott), but he did write it, and it is considered part of a loose trilogy that also includes QT's other 2 violent films, Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction.
I'm surprised I had never heard of this film until only a few years ago, because it has a star-studded cast including Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, Brad Pitt, Christopher Walken, Samuel L.
Jackson, and James Gandolfini. Anyway, this 1993 movie is about two people who quickly fall in love, but find themselves in a dangerous situation involving pimps, guns, drugs, and the mafia. The story is very much a QT film, with lots of violence, although there are many slower moments that focus on the romance.
The director does a good job of making the main characters likable, even though they aren't very good people. All in all, it was very entertaining and a good effort from a 1993 Tarantino who was still finding his legs.
