Review of True Romance (1993) by Adam C — 15 Aug 2011
Though it wasn't directed by him, everything about this one screams Tarantino. And, well, he did write it after all. Though the protagonists of the film are unlikeable in that they're pretty obviously f*&ked up, you can't help but to root for their relationship to pull through.
The ideas Slater gets to put them in the fast-lane are obviously high risk, and you know things are going to blow up in his face practically from the first scene, but he's tough as nails and so are the filmmakers.
The action sequences are grotesque but they're certain to grab your attention, and the cameo appearances for the sake of monologue (Walken) or comedy (Pitt) are extremely well picked. The self-reflexive dialogue, which tended to make fun of Hollywood movies, was fun to sit through as well.
It's good to see that Tarantino had this style established for himself so early on, and that it hasn't changed much since. He's certainly earned his status as an auteur, and Tony Scott was a good director to pair him with.
