Review of True Romance (1993) by Briain D — 07 Sep 2011
Fantastic picture from Quentin Tarantino and Tony Scott! True Romance is a gritty, violent, engrossing film that draws one in right from the start and doesn't let one go until the end. Slater and Arquette are both excellent, playing extremely flawed, yet amiable, characters, and talented actors like Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper are effective in their smaller roles. The cast is definitely one of the film's strongest points!
The story, whilst etchy at the start, is exciting and tense, with humour and action going hand in hand! I think Arquette's transformation from call girl to lovestruck and Slater's from timid to tough are too sudden to be believable but, once a firm story is set, the film takes off and never looks back. Some say the film is excessively violent but I don't agree. The violent scenes are some of the best in the film and make for exciting viewing throughout.
I really recommend this film to anyone who wants an original, intense and funny action picture with plenty of twists. I don't recommend it to those who can't stomach plenty of violence!
