Review of True Romance (1993) by Breeyon B — 28 Aug 2012
This is the hardest Tony Scott movie to grade. After seeing it as often as I have, there are obvious flaws. But at the end of the day, when Quentin Tarantino, who wrote the film and is prone for long continuous shots and off-screen violence, praises Tony Scott for making a better film than Tarantino could have.
... You have to agree this was a perfect combination of both directing styles. Tony Scott is almost the exact opposite of Tarantino in regards to style and yet it works in True Romance. It's still a "Tarantino film" to movie buffs, but the style makes it unique.
Despite the violence which is extremely graphic (particularly when James Gandolfinni beats Patricia Arquette), Scott is able to get far more emotion out of the audience than anything Tarantino did to that point in his career and you feel the "love story" that is the movie's core.
Ive seen this way too many times, and I still find it underrated. Not my favorite Tony Scott movie.... But it might be his best.
