Review of True Romance (1993) by Frank V — 29 May 2014
Tony Scott's - Scratch that. Quentin Tarantino's True Romance is a dark, funny, tense, wild ride. Although Tony Scott is the director, and does a fine job, the stage is Tarantino's, and boy does he deliver.
His writing is incredible, up there with Resevoir Dogs and Inglorious Basterds (not quite Pulp fiction levels). And wow, The ensemble cast here is incredible: Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette in the leads, but sub-characters consist of Christopher Walken, Brad Pitt, Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, James Gandolfini, and last but not least Gary freaking Oldman.
Surprisingly, especially to a fan like me, the only person who didn't bring their A game was Hans Zimmer. His score was great at most parts, but sometime (and a bit too often too) it felt just wrong.
For instance during a shootout, the music felt like I was watching It's A Wonderful Life. However it's all nitpicking in a superb film. 5/5.
