Review of True Lies (1994) by Dave A — 08 Jun 2011
Probably the last great Ahnald Schwarzenegger action film, and a whirlwind action spectacle so smooth the movie has time to an elaborate detour involving a "love triangle" and a hilarious strip tease. The was the first time I thought, wow Jaime Lee Curtis CAN be hot!! Even her terrible dance was funny and sexy, it was quite hypnotic!!
So Ahnaaaald plays a spy who shoots people, and his commanding officer has the stereotypical badass eye patch that tells us he's the fucking shit. Too bad he's just a whino here! The Arnold, Tom, is quite effective as the funny man, comedic sidekick, and I can't recall him in a funnier role. Unless you can't his marriage to Roseanne Barr!! Ziiing ;).
This movie is also notable for the beginning of the end of the film career for Tia Carrere, who would soon slip into television hell filming endless seasons of Relic Hunter. She's a looker, but doesn't get much time to "act" and be more than a pretty face. It's a shame, because I'd rather watch her "act" than Jaime Lee Curtis!
All joking aside, True Lies is a fun, light-hearted action thriller that was instrumental in bringing the world up to speed with possible reprecussions felt after the Persian Gulf war. If any movie could have foreshadowed 9-11, it was this one.
Great story, great action, dialogue, True Lies is yet another great James Cameron movie. Blowing terrorist scum up while saving pre-pubescent Eliza Dushku has never been more fun!! Yeaaah.
