Review of True Legend (2010) by Dan L — 23 Aug 2010
Yuen is worldwidely known as one of the most famous Asian filmmakers. He has collaborated on movies such as Matrix, Kill Bill, Drunken Master or Chrouching Tiger, Hidden Tragon. Mostly as fighting coordinator. Now, after nearly 15 years, he returns as director. And may I say, True Legend is most definitely one of the best martial arts films I've ever seen. It has a very interesting story, stars some of the biggest names of Asian cinema and features - of course - a couple of very creative and breathtaking fights.
Yuen states once again that he's the best fighting choreographer out there. I mean, don't forget that he's the guy who discovered Jackie Chan!
If you're a martial arts fan, this movie is a definite must see. It also features supporting appearances by Kill Bill co-workers David Carradine and Goron Liu, and Bruce Lee's heir as Kato, Jay Chou. The movie is just what I expected, though towards the end it becomes a little sappy. It's not only a revival of the infamous Drunken style, but also a promising blow by the Hong Kong cinema towards Hollywood. If it were for me, I would give this movie a chance for "Best Foreign Film" next year...
It gets 18 points from me. One of the finest movies of year so far (btw, it's from 2010, not 2009...).
