Review of True Legend (2010) by Millo T — 01 Sep 2010
This movie could have been great, unfortunately it wasn't. Renowned as the movie David Carradine (Kung fu, Kill Bill, etc.) was acting in when he died, True Legend will be watched by many.
At nearly two hours, this movie had all the qualities to be great:
1) A good cast with interesting characters.
2) Great fight scenes.
3) Decent special effects (Though the CGI was a bit retro 1980's).
4) A love story.
5) Beautiful Chinese scenery.
Unfortunately, the movie also had:
1) Bad editing. In fact, there was one scene they just abruptly cut to black early in the movie.
2) A disjointed storyline. They cut the film into three parts that had completely different stories. A war, a filial revenge scene, and a kung fu boxing match up. The only thing tying the three parts together was the main character's love for his wife.
3) The unexplained evolution of the main character's Kung fu from Wu shu to Drunken Kung fu. Why he did it or how was never explained.
Nevertheless, True Legend offered a mediocre entertaining experience. There were some scenes that were really cool and left you wishing they just chose one story that they executed well, rather than three half-heartedly mashed together. Still, as I stated earlier this movie will be watched by many as it was David Carradine's last film. Though I must say his ringmaster character probably had only 10 lines with less then 10 minutes of screen time. All and all, can't really say its worth a rental or viewing unless you really like watching kung fu movies or want to give David Carradine one last final homage.
