Review of True Legend (2010) by Freddy L — 24 Sep 2010
Woo-Ping Yuen is one of the most well respected martial arts directors around with films like Snake In the Eagle's Shadow, Drunken Master, and Iron Monkey in his résumé, just to name a few. True Legend is his first feature film since Iron Monkey 2 in 1996 and while the fight choreography is up to Yuen's standards, everything else is pretty sloppy.
All of the film's strengths, which mostly lie in the action sequences, suffer from the use of almost ridiculous looking CGI at times. The story is incredibly anti-climactic from the get go while the film goes on way too long with the last forty minutes or so being completely pointless to the rest of the story.
True Legend is still worth seeing for martial arts fanatics, but enthusiasts who are familiar with Yuen's previous work will more than likely leave somewhat disappointed.
