Review of True Grit (2010) by Seth S — 14 Jul 2012
Very, very good. There are no surprises really along the way. But everything about this movie is done well. The acting is well done, the story is well told, the visual aspect is beautiful, and the direction is done with a steady, and even hand.
The story is a simple one. Mattie Ross's father has died, his killer is Tom Chaney and he has gotten off scot-free after killing Mattie's father. She then goes on a journey for revenge with the help of marshal Rooster Cogburn and a Texas Ranger named LaBoeuf.
Jeff Bridges plays Rooster Cogburn. He has a weird accent/way of speech that is a bit distracting, but other then that he is very good. Newcomer Hailee Steinfeld plays Mattie Ross. She is really incredible in this movie, and i'm interested to see how her career will continue. My favorite actor, Matt Damon, plays LaBoeuf. He has a Southern accent and a mustache that makes him hard to recognize. It's not the usual Matt Damon performance, but he is fantastic. Josh Brolin and Barry Pepper round out the cast.
Overall, this movie is very strong. But I doubt that it will blow many people away, it'll just leave them with a feeling of, 'I just saw a really good movie.'.
"I thought you were going to say the sun was in your eyes. That is to say, your eye." 8/10.
