At long last the Coen brothers finally give us a thoroughbred Western. Although 'No Country For Old Men' can be classed as a 'contemporary Western', True Grit is a proper old-school remake of the John Wayne classic, and classic is indeed a good word to describe this film.

A superb cast, beautiful script, and memorable cinematography, all combine to make this film pretty darn close to perfection. Jeff Bridges - who just seems to get better and better with age - is utterly brilliant, Matt Damon is also superb, but really this film is all about young newcomer Hailee Steinfeld (this is her first film), and the Coen's struck gold in finding her.

Looking to employ someone to apprehend her Father's murderer, young Mattie (Steinfeld) seeks a man with 'True Grit', and employs Jeff Bridges to catch the villain. Along the way they team up with Matt Damon's Texas Ranger 'LeBeouf', who Mattie later realises may be the man with 'True Grit' that she seeks, but ultimately the film is about her having the True Grit, not the seasoned veterans she travels with.

The scripting of the film is what stood out for me. Beautifully written, and often very humourous, the dialogue flows along smoothly.

All in all a classic, and surely it will go down in history as one of the great Westerns of all time.
