Review of True Grit (2010) by Greg L — 28 Nov 2012
Tensely plotted, beautifully shot, and powerfully acted, this is the best western movie since Clint Eastwood's masterpiece "Unforgiven". Jeff Bridges is outstanding as a broken down U.S. marshal whose drunken, blustery facade conceals the extremely competent and ruthless lawman beneath, as is young actress Hailee Steinfeld as a teenage girl whose pluck, determination, and intelligence carry her past challenges seemingly beyond someone her age even as her sharp tongue gets her into situations in which the chivalric codes of the old west may not protect her.
It doesn't quite measure up against the Coen brothers' best films (hardly a damning critique - how many dramas are as good as "Fargo" or "No Country For Old Men"?) , but this is still a terrific film.
