Review of True Grit (2010) by Doctor S — 10 Aug 2013
Read the book a loooong time ago but I couldn't dismiss the false notes that Hailee Steinfeld struck as 14-year-old Mattie. She seemed too calculating while reciting rather than expressing her lines, whereas the book character got her way through sheer determination.
That and an unfulfilling epilogue were about the only downsides as Jeff Bridges creates a Rooster Cogburn equally memorable yet completely different from John Wayne, which were obviously big boots to fill.
Lots of great character moments throughout as Rooster constantly butts horns with Texas Ranger LaBeouf (Matt Damon), my favorite being the cornbread-shooting scene. Josh Brolin shows up late in the story but is terrific as the slow-witted object of Mattie's vengeance.
Another robust winner from the Coens.
