Review of True Grit (2010) by Twainfile — 05 Jan 2011
It seems axiomatic by now that remakes of good films usually fall well short of the mark. With the often brilliant Coen brothers at the helm, Steven Spielberg producing and Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon starring, this film promised to be the exception---especially if you read the critics.
I don't know what film they thought they saw, but the one I saw was decidedly not the exception that proves the rule. Gritty it was, but truly entertaining, engrossing and exciting it decidedly was not.
Jeff Bridges was a cross between Wallace Beery and Lee Marvin's "Kid Sheleen"---in either case his unintelligible dialogue needed subtitles. Matt Damon's bland performance almost had one longing for the original's Glen Campbell.
A disappointing dud.
