Review of True Grit (2010) by Darkzx — 08 Jan 2011

I took my friend on a date to see this movie, she and I both had very high expectations, given the amazing cast and the reviews I had already read about it. We enjoyed it, and when I say enjoy it I don't mean we thought it was extremely good, we just enjoyed it. The acting was the biggest highlight of this movie by far. With absolutely exceptional performances by Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin, Matt Damon and Hailee Steinfeld. The group of these four amazing actors in my opinion is what made the film.

However a good film does not come without its flaws, and in this case, this movies biggest major flaw was the slow progression of the storyline, the dull setting (It felt like it was just a dusty desert town, nothing really that drew me into the scenery. Hailee did an amazing job in her breakout role, that's the main thing I noticed, she seemed like she was an absolute natural. Continuing, as the story continued onward, I was noticing that the film was trying to draw us to the characters, make us relate to them, however it was not the cinematography that brought me closer to the characters, it was the acting of the characters themselves. However I felt at the same time that the characters themselves were undeveloped.

As for action... Well It seems as if the Coen Brothers tried a little too hard on story rather than actually having qualities that would keep people interested, because the story seemed to be strained in all cases, making it hard to watch this in the way that I personally thought the Coen Brothers wanted us to watch the film like.

All in all it was a pretty good movie, I congratulate the Coen Brothers on making a movie with this much promise and nearly living up to the expectations (acting was amazing, story.... not so much).

Final Rating: 7.2/10.

If you want to see amazing acting and follow the characters of this movie, go see it, if your looking for an action packed wild west gunfight cowboy brawl, this isn't for you.
