Review of True Grit (2010) by Simon G — 18 Sep 2012
The Cohen Brothers take on the Charles Portis novel that spawned the much lauded 1969 John Wayne adaptation. There are a few changes to back-story to freshen things up and Jeff Bridges plays the infamous Rooster Cogburn as more man than myth but still with the guts and gristle of a once legendary marshal starting to feel his age.
The word play between Mattie (Hailee Steinfeld) and Cogburn - in fact between Mattie and any character she comes into contact with - is quick, witty and a joy to behold. True Grit doesn't quite reach the heights of the Cohen's modern western, No Country for Old Men, but their collective steady and assured written and directorial hand is in fine and firm evidence throughout.
