Review of Trucker (2008) by David S — 12 May 2010
"Trucker" is a mediocre film that is basically a variation and combination of two tired genres: the irresponsible mother-child film and the road movie. I've seen too many of these, and this one brings absolutely nothing new to the table.
Writer/Director James Mottern doesn't strive to be original. This would be forgiveable if he was actually able to do well by his material. But there is little about the barely-there plot and characters that carries any genuine emotion.
Monaghan, an actress who has been unimpressive to date in second-tier parts, does not do much to dispell the notion that she is a passable actor at best. She's mostly unconvincing in this role. Mottern does do a couple of things right though.
His dialogue between the mother and her abandoned child is free of cheap sentimentality, and the movie doesn't overstay its welcome.
