Review of Troy (2004) by Lauren M — 06 Nov 2011
I always am ashamed to admit to people that this is one of my top ten favorite movies, but I am always pleasantly surprised that most people respond with "I love that movie" when I bring it up. I don't feel so weird any more :).
I am still a little lost as to why critics and some people seem to hate it so much. I understand it is "historically inaccurate" but we are basically talking about mythology here...isn't all mythology made-up? Brad Pitt's acting is sub-par but Byrne and Bana make up for this. The action scenes and effects are great, the tension/respect between Hector and Achilles is excellent, and the sound track is amazing. And "lacking emotional resonance"? I know I am a huge crier in movies if anything is even the tiniest bit emotional, but I was literally in hysterics from Patriclus' (spelling?) death and onward. I thought the whole thing was so moving and I literally hated Orlando Bloom because of this movie.
I will defend my love for this movie forever. Great action, and very emotionally powerful in my mind. I secretly want to be Achilles!
