Review of Troy (2004) by Cole M — 19 May 2012
Troy stands out to be a brilliant epic and for epics to work, everything must synchronise to make it remorable, which Troy does sufficiently. Firstly the soundtrack has moments of sheer genius (eg. when Achillies dies), but it mainly consists of annoying shrieking woman and repetitive rhythms (which don't work). The soundtrack mainly brought the emotional basis from the film down because instead of being drawn to tears I was drawn to anger at shrieking woman.
The acting is average in moments but is mainly good. Eric Bana and Diane Kruger give the weakest performances, vomiting up their lines and Hector's character especially was only saved by an amazing script-writer. Orlanda Bloom and Brad Pitt perform good but could have just given their characters more effort. The best roles are Peter O'Toole (even though I was distracted by his annoying facial expressions), Brian Cox, Brendan Gleeson and Sean Bean.
All other elements worked perfectly, keeping my attention for the full span of the film. The fight scenes were especially well choreographed and shot.
Overall, Troy is a memorable experience that is highly entertaining.
82.5%.
