Review of Troy (2004) by Jeff J — 11 Jun 2015
I rank this right up there with Braveheart and Gladiator. However I think battle scenes are not really a fair comparison b/c by the time Troy came out, CGI was much more developed. A lot of the battle scenes here are CGI, you probably can't tell which means they did a good job. They used the CGI in the background to expand the size of the army etc... Braveheart / Gladiator battle scenes were all acted out 100%.
I like how they chose not to go through the usual path of Greek mythology and kinda went with a more historically accurate version. Critics here are harsh with this because those old folgies are out of touch. They're 1 tracked minded. This is a very daring movie and I think it definitely paid off. I rather watch the movie as it is than another bunch of old people on Olympus discussing divine politics.
Storywise etc, no surprise since we all know it. 4 stars is as high as I will give any excellent film. 5 stars are reserved for movies that wow and stunned me, usually requires some very creative and original writing that surprises me.
