Review of Trouble with the Curve (2012) by Lori K — 08 Feb 2013
A conventional story told very well, TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE satisfies as the kind of high-quality, feel-good drama that doesn't get made very often in recent times. Clint Eastwood does more of his crotchety old man schtick, but he brings a nice heartfelt quality to the part.
Amy Adams is first rate (as usual), elevating the rather trite father/daughter dynamic to a place that feels decently fresh and compelling. Timberlake is charming, Goodman is affable, and the rest of the supporting roster (filled out by a bunch of "that guy"s) is solid.
Interestingly, the baseball stuff almost works as a companion piece to MONEYBALL, though it takes a decidedly more "old school" approach to the subject of talent evaluation than that film did.
It's not groundbreaking cinema or a transcendent depiction of the human condition, but it is well-made and full of genuine warmth, and that's more than enough to recommend the film.
