Review of Tropical Malady (2004) by Liam P — 12 Jul 2009
This films pacing is exceptionally slow, which is to be expected if you are familiar with Weerasethakul's work. The film is split into two sections, one about two young men who have fallen in love, the second about a Thai myth of a shapshifter who preys on visitors livestocks.
Its beautiful and consists of some very good scenes particularly between the two leads. The homoeroticism is very subtle and does not seem forced or unreal. I just wish the film was a little faster paced, as it dragged for me much more than Syndromes of the Century or Blissfully Yours.
All and all its interesting but just too slow for me to really get into.
