Review of Tropic Thunder (2008) by Lex J — 29 May 2014
At my peak of intellectual snobbery (throughout mid to end of university) I only allowed myself to like certain humour, and looked down on these parodies as something I 'evolved' from. Thank goodness I devolved! This comedy is extremely funny by the definition of funny--it reveals the unseen or unexpected or unarticulated.
And it reminded me that humour of most kinds *is* intelligence, aware of something you are not. I still dislike Adam Sandler movies along with Hangover-like comedies, but Tropic Thunder is high above those in my opinion.
In the movie, Downy Jr becomes proud of Stiller for toning down his acting for subtlety; in real life, I am awed by the utter delicate artfulness of the movie. The best things: 1) Tom Cruise, 2) Stiller, 3) Downy Jr, 4) scriptwriters.
.. can I list all of them?
