Review of Tropic Thunder (2008) by Cole M — 19 May 2012
Tropic Thunder, the fictional tale behind the most ballsy Vietnam flick ever made, is one of 2008's biggest failures. A good comedy, like Anchorman, is one that you can watch repeatedly with the one-liners splitting your sides open every time you hear them.
The film's merits lie in Robert Downey Jr.'s performance, humorously being an American, playing an Australian, playing an African-American with incredible believability and charisma.
The rest of the star-studded cast sadly, do whatever they've done before. Jack Black's performance is what its always been and sadly becomes terribly monotonous with only a few humorous scenes (namely, being tied to a tree and offering incredibly, um, controversial rewards for his release).
Ben Stiller's actions in producing, directing and acting in the film, are incredibly admirable but sadly result in an incredibly amateurish and one-time-comedy.
Sure it has its moments of humour, but when a film has those moments of humour that are meant to be funny but are just 'not', its incredibly painful to watch (Tom Cruise 'dancing' with horrible makeup and Ben Stiller creating cheap humour as a 'Simple Jack'? Its unbearable).
Seriously, would you buy this?
