Review of Tropic Thunder (2008) by Matt M — 06 Jan 2014
In this film about a film about a mission in Vietnam where a cast of prima donnas is forced to exectute the film as if it really were a mission, Ben Stiller creates another eccentric vision that recalls his earlier work Zoolander.
A satirical take on cinema and the celebrity culture in general, somewhat of a favoured theme in Stiller's cinema, the key to Tropic Thunder's fun is its eccentricity but also a surprising cleverness and the chemistry between the film's leads - Stiller himself, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr.
who buy into the fun of the film and portray their colourful character with gusto. In fact, the film also features a bald, cold hearted producer played by Tom Cruise at his funniest and in a never seen before way - this is just one of the many surprised that Tropic Thunder has in store for its audience.
