Review of Tropic Thunder (2008) by Gavin M — 19 May 2014
When I first saw this film I thought it was okay. But the more I watched it, the better it got. Robert Downey Jr is the main reason to watch this film. He totally steals every scene as the very extreme method 7 time Academy Award actor Kirk Lazarus who gets all "method" to play the platoons black patrol sergeant Sgt.
Linkin O'Sirus. You can't take yours eyes off him the whole time watching the movie because it's so hard to believe its RDJ under all that make up. He definitely deserved the best supporting actor nomination that year.
And in my opinion if it weren't for Heath Ledger's unforgettable performance as The Joker in "The Dark Knight," RDJ would have taken home the prize that night. But most surprisingly too is Tom Cruise's performance as the movie producer Lex Grossman.
He as well has some great scene stealer moments that makes us remember why we fell in love with Tom Cruise the actor and not Tom Cruise the scientologist. Ben Still and Jack Black have some funny moments as well but it's mostly RDJ and Cruise that steal the show with their supporting performances.
And as the director also, Ben Stiller does a nice job crafting this very funny and entertaining war film as it echoes hints of all the great war films out there. From Apocalypse Now(overrated), Platoon and Saving Private Ryan this is a definitely must see comedy.
