Review of Troop Beverly Hills (1989) by Scott A — 23 Aug 2013
I remember seeing this back in the day on like HBO or something, mostly just remembered the end part with the race.
I actually really enjoyed this film. Shelley Long is so great here. She's essentially playing a rich snob character, but she's so adorable, it is just impossible not to love her character. This is the kind of role I could see in modern times for Taylor Swift to do if she ever wanted. Serious!
A lot of the fan is the Girl Scout members, as some have been in other stuff I enjoyed as a child. Of course Carla Gugino is the stand out, as she continues to be a huge actress in her career. Ami Foster from Punky Brewster, Kellie Martin from Life Goes On, Heather Hopper from Miss Bliss(the prequel to Saved By The Bell) andEmily Schulman from Small Wonder.
Tori Spelling also shows up as a rival Scout. A ton of celebrity cameos are sprinkled throughout as well.
It's corny, but the good corny that makes the nearly two hour long movie fly by and it's just good fun. You don't have to be rich to appreciate how these girls evolve either.
Not sure why it was ravaged by critics.
