Review of TRON: Legacy (2010) by Nathan M — 03 May 2013
A consummate visual masterpiece, TRON: Legacy is both a necessarily reverent sequel and a gorgeous thrill ride. Jeff Bridges (as Kevin Flynn) elevates the thin video game premise and is convincing as a Obi-wan Kenobi type and Michael Sheen appears to channel David Bowie in his fun ten minutes on screen.
The score by Daft Punk is not really any more remarkable than one by 2010s Hans Zimmer, which is to say adequate with bursts of distinction every once in a long while. Now the script is simple with perhaps two too many one-liners and insufficient humor, but pretty and intellectually simplistic often go hand in hand even outside the cinematic world.
The bottom line is that the film's visual style, as articulated by the art direction, set design, cinematography, and dark-toned CGI is fully and optimally realized, making for an enthrallingly beautiful artistic experience.
And also, for anyone who watched Johnny Quest as a child will be instantly sucked in.
