Review of Tron (1982) by Jessi H — 25 Apr 2011
"On the other side of the screen, it all looks so easy.".
I do not think Iâ(TM)ve ever heard a worse musical score. Talk about not fitting with the movie moments at all and being ear-piercing!!!
The female character is someone who will kiss about any guy in front of her if heâ(TM)s heroic, but I believe sheâ(TM)s a victim of the time period and will try to be forgiving with it.
Though a smart plot, it has no excitement to the storyline. The filmmakers throw you in at a strange place and also end the film awkwardly. The dialogue was goofy at times. There are failures of pacing, structure, and characterization which ultimately make the film seem monotonous and unrelatable. The characters are all lacking in any kind of depth. Jeff Bridgeâ(TM)s character is just strange at times. Boxleitner is all about being goodie-two-shoes. And weâ(TM)ve already covered the loose-with-her-kisses token girl.
The special effects are silly when you see things now a days. You compare this to a movie like the original (untouched) Star Wars where those special effects could still hold water today, and it can be hard to understand the pioneering this film created. But watching it after Tron:Legacy, it just makes things look worse for the original. Weâ(TM)re spoiled now with the amazing advances in CGI, so looking back can sometimes make you cringe. One can only wonder what would happen if George Lucas got his hands on it⦠lets not go there.
I'm surprised Disney did not do a redo of this. They used all the same vehicles and just modernized their look. There's so much potential in this story. I think its a good start and brought something original to film lore. I liked what it was trying to do. Lets face it, those evil computers abounded the late 70's/early 80's sci fi films. I know if I would have watched this as a kid, my opinion would be different, but I didn't.
To be honest, I thought both films had something which complimented the other. The original spent a lot of time trying to explain the concepts and less time on the action and suspense portions. The latest movie was fantastic with special effects and action, but there was a lack of depth to the script. Both need to work on their characterization. And each seem to only be able to handle one female character??? So where one suffers, the other makes up for. I am glad I watched the movie, but its not one Iâ(TM)d watch over and over again, especially with that horrid and frightening musical score. It was jarring and took me out of the film. Ug. Cover your ears!!!
