No one would dispute that, when compared to today's movie-making technology, the original Tron falls flat on its 30-year-old face. However, if you get too preoccupied comparing the cult classic's meager effects to modern-day silver-screen wizardry, then you're missing the point: in its day, Tron was a landmark film.

It had a totally original look, and I would argue that no other film since then has captured quite the same visual aesthetic. The producers were trying to portray what it might look like to be inside of a 1982 arcade game, and that's exactly what you see on screen.

It's totally accurate to the time period. Also, keep in mind that Tron may have been the first film made on the subject of computer hacking. As I was sitting in the theater watching this fantasy classic nearly 3 decades after its original release, I realized that, from one perspective, this movie could be pretty funny to today's audiences.

However, from another perspective, it has a charm that only comes with age. It's a true time-capsule: perhaps only now, 30 years later, are we able to look back and appreciate the significance of a movie like Tron.
