Review of Tron (1982) by Stephen H — 20 Mar 2012
Disney, in an attempt to capitalize on the growing fandom for video games, produced this film about a programmer (Jeff Bridges) who gets sucked into a computer world. In a twist mirroring The Wizard of Oz, all the characters that the programmer encounters are computer generated reflections of the people he knows in the real world.
Ultimately, his goal is to assist Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) in freeing the citizens of the virtual community from a tyrannical overlord. The plot is a cookie-cutter concept that liberally borrows from Star Wars, but this movie does have a lot of interesting visual snap and a brilliant score by Wendy Carlos.
It's hardly a masterpiece, but Tron is a mildly entertaining time capsule of the era that conceived it.
