Review of Tron (1982) by David F — 06 Nov 2012
This is a time capsule which doesn't attempt to mirror the present through a prediction of the future but rather presents and critiques contemporary attitudes toward technology through a techno-fantasy plot of real people imprisoned by video games.
The music and special effects were once advanced but now seem somewhat dated (some of the costumes look like neon cardboard) and they're in the service of a plot which could only really appeal to a nerd but the film still charms with its celebration of arcade culture and its satire of the corporate culture of mature technology companies which were once exciting and versatile small businesses founded by idealists in their garages.
