Review of Tron (1982) by Andy S — 30 Mar 2012
It's difficult to believe that a movie of this caliber did so poorly upon its initial theatrical release. Of course, it HAS grown in popularity over the years on home video and television, but as much fun as this movie is, I can't fathom being a young kid going to see this and not liking it (of course, I was born a month after this film was released).
It's a fun movie about playing video games for real. Fantastic concept, at a time when playing video games meant making a trip to the mall. Tron's CGI effects, while dated now, are still incredibly impressive.
To me, this movie is The Matrix of 1982. It has that feeling to it. An outsider in a strange world, who becomes it savior...well, it's certainly not a new idea. Many storytellers had used that plot outline long before The Matrix did, but it was probably one of the most memorable of its uses (at least to modern audiences).
As for the movie only received four stars, my only beef with the it is its length. Yes, it's only 96 minutes long, but I think a few trims here and there could've tightened it up just a little more.
I'm very much looking forward to the upcoming sequel, so a revisit to this classic movie got me appropriately warmed up and ready to see it. Even if YOU haven't seen it, go out and rent. Netflix it.
Do something. You'll love it!
