Review of Trolls (2016) by E S — 21 Feb 2017
I usually like films that use contemporary music to create a story-line, but I was feeling pretty "meh" throughout the whole movie. I think it would've actually been a pretty good movie, but SPOILERS at the end of the movie, Poppy doesn't change.
She changes Branch, helps him find his "happiness," but she just goes back to being all sunshine and rainbows. Her helping Bridget at the end doesn't even contradict her character, because she's always been a happy and bleeding heart kinda character.
She pretty much develops little to nothing with her character, which was extremely unsatisfying. Branch, however, gets a lot of character development, but he comes across as the "social pariah proved wrong" by the end.
I'd say the best moment of the whole movie is during the "True Colours" song, but that's because Branch is showing a great deal of empathy and looking past his own mistakes and trauma to help someone he cares for.
Over all, I'd rate it a C, but the lack of character development for Poppy and the rest of the trolls makes it a D.
