Review of Trolls (2016) by Ben L — 02 Oct 2017
The formula for Trolls is ridiculously overused. I cannot count the number of times I?ve seen kids movies or TV shows with this exact same storyline. I suppose the target audience is young enough that they might not have sat through this story as many times as I have, but I was frustrated with the fact that it lacked any imagination.
Trolls is also the latest in a long line of modern animated films that mistakes randomness for humor. The characters behave silly, so we?re supposed to be laughing. That may work for the little ones (and apparently some adults who champion things like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) but it does nothing for me.
The plot was about as random as the humor, so that irritated me as well. The only real redeeming quality in Trolls was the music. They include covers of a few great songs, and also a couple original ones which are good.
The voice cast is not bad, at least when it comes to singing the songs. Needless to say, I was more than a little annoyed with this movie. I watched it with 2 little girls that adore the movie, so clearly it?s a hit with the people who need to like it.
It?s just too bad that this isn?t one of the animated movies that is designed to appeal equally to audiences of all ages.
